Anything but boring: Saffron spices up the Vegetarian Diet

Although vegetarian and vegan diets are currently very popular, and star chefs and writers like Attila Hildmann (“Vegan for Fun”) or Nicole Just (“Veganista”) are increasingly gaining publicity, many people believe that a diet without animal products is bland and boring. Which is why many people do not want to miss out on animal products like milk, cheese and eggs; despite the existence of many medical and ecological reasons clearly advocating a vegetarian and/or vegan diet. However, the idea of reducing meat consumption or eliminating it completely has certainly crossed many people’s minds.
Our tip for the undecided: why not just try a vegetarian or vegan diet for a week, without putting yourself under any pressure.
Paradoxically, many new vegetarians and vegans report that the switch to a meat-free diet actually opened their minds to a wealth of new taste experiences. It’s not that surprising, perhaps: anyone thinking about food in a conscious manner quickly discovers new favourite foods and usually automatically discovers completely new taste sensations as well.
Interest in different ways of preparing food and previously neglected spice and vegetable varieties increases all by itself. Add that to some time browsing through vegetarian cookbooks and you will be spoilt for choice. Such a change in diet leads many people to discover a new joy of cooking. Still looking for inspiration? Saffron is a spice that can even transform the simplest vegetarian soups, rice and pasta dishes and desserts into exceptional taste experiences. Saffron goes well with, for example, creamy pasta sauces (oat or soya cream), and chillies, as well as fruity desserts (vanilla, mango and lemon flavours make for great choices). For healthy diets, saffron is the icing on the cake. Whether in ancient times, traditional Chinese Medicine or in Ayurveda, saffron is well-known for its health-promoting properties and much more popular than in Europe.
