Meet our partner: Mariawald Abbey

MIASA works together with a variety of different bussiness partners to create unique saffron products. One of these partners is Mariawald Abbey in Heimbach, which has produced top quality traditional herb liquors for more than a century. Mariawald’s “Klosterlikör” is based on an herb cordial that was developed by a local pharmacist together with the Abbey’s Prior at the time. Half a century later, this recipe was modified to create the trappist Abteitropfen.
A place of prayer
Mariawald has been a place of calm and spiritual contemplation for over half a milennium. The first chapel was erected there in 1479, and the later monastery was elevated to become an Abbey in 1909. Over the centuries, it has served as a pilgrimage site for uncountable visitors. Today, it still draws many visitors, from religious pilgrims, to tourists and hikers.
Sustainability and Tradition
The store as well as the cloister’s restaurant offer sustainable and natural products. That means local bread and organic sustainably farmed and hunted meat from the local area. The herb liquor is produced exclusively from herbs and other natural ingredients. By working with MIASA, they can ensure that the saffron used—whose provenance can otherwise be difficult to trace—is of the highest quality and was produced sustainably. This dedication to tradition and quality are ultimately what gives the liquor its unique bouquet.
